    This study aims to recapture the cultural context of The Square¡¯s revision of Sino-Korean words into pure Korean words. In The Square, Choi In-hun represented postcolonial Korea as a space in which the ¡°rumor¡± and the ¡°scene¡± collided, which resulted in the failure of a union between sophistication and experience. As such, The Square could be seen as a novel of culture attempting to unite sophistication and experience. Postcolonial Korean intellectuals were able to speculate the West and Korea together only through analogies, in their thinking language that has naturalized and accepted old empire Japan¡¯s translations of western terms. Thus, there existed the country¡¯s linguistic division between thinking language and everyday language. Through the revision, Choi aimed to reconstruct ideologizing in ¡°our language.¡± He specifically revised the novel¡¯s Sino-Korean notations of western terms into ¡°our language,¡± an experimental language that would lead to an equivalence between everyday language and thinking language or would call for a union between sophistication and experience. This revision was also a task requiring the reconceptualization of the intellectual history and the representational space of Korea, which was reorganized entering the global system at the end of the 19th century. However, Choi failed to reconceptualize ideology in general, instead merely modifying the notations. Although he revisioned ¡°thinking¡± in ¡°our language,¡± he could only ¡°ideologize¡± in ¡°our language.¡±
