The progressive characteristic of the plays of Lope shined the brightest in his pure comedies. In order to maximize the effects of social and progressive messages of the pure comedies, he combined the baroque propensity exquisitely, which was a new artistic current at that time. Then throughout this, a court fantasy comedy, a new sub-genre of comedy, was made. This fantastic circumstance of the play was developed to be more complicated in the plays of Calder¨®n de la Barca,the peak of baroque plays. For example, in the court fantasy comedy of Lope, the audience forgot the reality they belonged to and totally sank into a fantastic mood of the play. On the other hand, in the play La vida es sue?o, a major work of Calder¨®n, the protagonist Segismundo felt confused by crossing the borderline between reality and fantasy. The background of the play is Poland, which is an unfamiliar place, and the protagonist himself was wondering around between the reality and dream in this strange world that the audiences experienced extreme confusion and chaos of the situation. Throughout this, they then approached to metaphysical and philosophical messages that the author had intended.
Above this, the baroque characteristics of Lope's play are found in the theoretical structure and duality of the message. Getting out of the unitary structure, which Aristotelian play had pursued, Lope's play has two different story structures inside of one play, and symmetrical characters appeared. Also, ambiguous messages having more than two interpretations are left to the audiences that so many dualities appeared.
The factors, such as twofold story development of the two different stories and symmetrical symbols of dream and reality, appeared in the above mentioned La vida es sue?o are the baroque characteristics which also could be found in the Lope's plays.
