One of the heated debates in analytic aesthetics since the 20th century occurs between realism and anti-realism concerning aesthetic properties. Regarding the case in which agreement in aesthetic judgment is achieved, the aesthetic property realist says that the agreement is due to our success in perceiving one of the real aesthetic properties of the object. On the other hand, the anti-realist says that agreement in aesthetic judgment is due to the fact that the perceivers have been under similar aesthetic conditioning and thus respond to the object in similar ways. In this paper I will firstly reformulate the debate in question as centered on the issue of qualia sensitivity. After this, I will show that both realists and anti-realists are committed to the individualistic picture of mental states, namely, psychological individualism, and thus in conflict with psychological externalism. Finally, I will discuss philosophical significances of the fact that both realists and anti-realists are committed to psychological individualism.
