This paper deals with Enryo Inoue, famous for his simultaneous pursuit of patriotism and respect for truth expressed under the slogan of ��Protection of Country and Love of Truth.�� While engaged in modernization of Buddhism, he advocated the popularization of philosophy as a banner. This paper explored the logic that makes his various arguments coexit, such as ��Protection of Country and Love of Truth, �� popularization of philosophy, and improvement of Buddhism. This paper discussed followings in turn, that the philosophy he called genuine philosophy means metaphysics, that he actively tried to find genuine philosophy he found in German idealism in Buddhism, that he tried to make Buddhism play the same role in Japan as Christianity did in leading ethics and politics in pre-modern West, and that the pursuit of universal truth and special patriotism coexist by the ��phenomenon-as-being theory�� that is the concrete content of the genuine philosophy. In conclusion, it was discussed that Buddhism as a religion was the most important thing for him, and philosophy was an important device to explain the modernity of Buddhism and Japanese civilization.
