The purpose of this study is to understand the distribution and characteristics of the place names of administrative ¡®Dong¡¯ and ¡®Ri¡¯ in North Gangwon-do. The research data used topographic maps issued during Japanese colonial era and data from North Korea and the National Geographic Information Institute. The results of this study are as follows. First, North Gangwon-do has 462 administrative ¡®Dong¡¯ and ¡®Ri¡¯ systems in 2 Si and 15 Gun. Second, the largest number of administrative ¡®Dong¡¯ and ¡®Ri¡¯ in North Gangwon-do is 59 of Wonsan-si, and 37 of Cheorwon-gun at the Gun level. The smallest number is 15 in Gimhwa-gun. Third, among the most frequent all geographical names with the same place name, Sinheung, which means building a new village and wishing for the village to flourish, is the most common with 4, and in the case of 3, there are 6, including Yongpo and Yongcheon. Fourth, the highest frequently used letters of place names were ¡®San(mountain)¡¯ and the next priority was ¡®Sin(new)¡¯, which implies the process of changing village formation. Finally, out of 462 administrative ¡®Dong¡¯ and ¡®Ri¡¯, 192 physical names account for 42% of the total, and if limited to landform names, it reaches 35.9%.
This shows that the physical environment had a great influence on the formation of administrative ¡®Dong¡¯ and ¡®Ri¡¯ in North Gangwon-do. There were 89 synthetic place names, almost equivalent to human place names. This is thought to reflect the results of frequent administrative district reorganization in North Gangwon-do.
