The purpose of this paper is to find out the healing power through ¡®story¡¯ in The Playboy of the Western World. The life of a human being, who is a narrative being, is filled with various stories. Therefore, a change in a story can result in a change in life. John Millington Synge uses poetic language and peasant dialect for providing reality of the Aran Islands and his linguistic vitality which make characters vivid in this work.
In The Playboy of the Western World ¡®story¡¯ enables Christy to grow as a hero who is a mature character. Christy completes self-realization from a foolish and helpless lad under the oppression of his father, the symbol of power through it. The illusion of the villagers of Mayo and Pegeen¡¯s affection enable him to live energetic life. Also, Pegeen and villagers get courage to break the real restrictions such as morality and religion through Christy¡¯s story. In conclusion Christy, Pegeen and villagers experience the effect of healing through ¡®story¡¯ by attaining self-growth.
