This study investigates the changes of village names around Cheongpoong Region focusing on three townships, Eupnae, Geunseo and Suha. Including Geographical Map and Topography of Korea(ݛ�؈D��), the first document that records village names of Korea, Topography of Chungcheong Province(�Ҝ[�����I), Catalogue of Administrative Names of Korean Empire(�f�n���ط������^�����Qһ�[), Catalogue of New and Ancient Village Names of Administrative districts in Korea(���f���ճ��rȫ���������ﶴ���Qһ�[) are consulted for this research.
Catalogue of Administrative Names of Korean Empire(�f�n���ط������^�����Qһ�[) is an important document which reflects the administrative reform in 1895(32rd reign of Emperor Gejong) as a part of the Gabo Reform. Almost all the village names that can be found in this document are adopted without great changes in the administrative rearrangement of 1914. Considering that these toponyms are used until today it can be concluded that many village names are definitely well-established in the era of Korean Empire.
Sino-korean village names that are normally used as official toponyms are either originally named after sino-korean word or translated from native korean village names. There are two types of sino-korean translation. ��Jilgol���չȡ� is an example of meaning- based translation and ��Mooltae����̨�� is an example of sound-based translation. As for ��HanBau���̎r��, the front part is sound-based translation and th rear part is meaning-based translation.
A detailed research on the village names of specific areas is required to establish basic guidelines for the official naming of administrative toponyms.
