In this study, the concept of negative polarity noun phrases in Korean is established and their types are empirically examined.
Previous discussions on Korean negative polarity items primarily focused on negative polarity nouns. However, even if a noun does not possess negative polarity, the entire NP can exhibit negative polarity if the determiner or particle within it has negative polarity.
Based on this observation, four macro types and seventeen micro types of negative polarity noun phrases were identified. By closely examining dictionary and corpus examples, the characteristics of each type of Korean negative polarity noun phrases were empirically investigated. The study identified 62 negative polarity nouns, 7 negative polarity particles, and 2 negative polarity determiners participating in both macro and micro syntactic patterns. These findings can be actively utilized not only in theoretical contexts but also in practical fields such as Korean language education.
