This paper had main aims that to analyse articles related with elephants in the record of Sahaeng(ʹ��: diplomatic trip) of Ming and Ching, to draw aspects and level of Joseon literary intellectuals�� understanding on China culture, and to grasp their meanings. For these, this paper firstly synthesized and arranged articles related with elephants in the record of Sahaeng(ʹ��: diplomatic trip) of Ming and Ching, connected this results to truth of Joseon literary intellectuals�� awareness on China and types of subjectivation and divided four levels, and to grasp their meanings.
As a results, this paper confirmed a series of course and aspects that to arrange China culture through experiences, to find new cultures of China through demonstration, to choose or exclude China culture through appreciate and to newly reform Joseon through thought and self-reflection. Then, this paper synthesized results so it could reveal meanings of articles related with elephants in the record of Sahaeng in history of cultural exchange before modern times and it grasped what these meanings indicate concretely.
Articles related with elephants in the record of Sahaeng dealt in this paper were the reports on elephants synthesized and arranged literary intellectuals of Joseon before modern times. Not only these articles were recorded with close relation with changed of awareness on China culture but also they concretely showed a series of course and aspects of reforming new subject for Joseon literary intellectuals through experiences of China culture. So these articles have the expanded meanings. However, most of these articles did not get over simple level of experience, demonstration, or appreciate, so this paper also confirmed achievements and limitations of Sahaeng experiences on China culture at the same time.
