Japanese people have been suffered from diverse disaster like earthquake, typhoon, volcano, and conflagration since ancient times. We can find lots of records in terms of those disaster from the premodern documents. Especially in the medieval literatures, natural disaster are used as a potent which generally manifest the aspects of characters�� feeling or the development of incidents. This essay is aimed to investigate the manners of utilizing really-happened disaster as the potent in Japanese medieval literature.
��Hozogi��, written by Gamono Chomey, shows the author��s sense of uncertainty or meaningless of life, occurred from disaster. In ��Heikemonogatari��, the authour utilize disaster as a manifestation of holy spirits�� anger or inauspicious events, by locating disaster into the probable plot. For comparing ��Heikemonogatari�� to ��Genpeizosuigi��, a different version of the former, the descriptions in terms of what happened and what characters feel about the disaster are different in quantitative aspect, but the same manner is revealed in utilizing disaster as the potent of incidents whithin the plots.
