In the political and cultural history of Late Qing, Mr. Zeng Guofan was a famous figure. His characteristic and cultural spirits were elevated to the crest of ��Three Immortalities�� of life values, and his success greatly influenced the Confucian intellectuals in Chinese modern history. Mr. Zeng Guofan was an important personage in the poetic history of Late Qing, who greatly affected the movement promoting Song poetic style in the period of Tongzhi(ͬ��)and Guangxu(����). In the domain of classical prose, Mr. Zeng Guofan was regarded as a savior who helped the declining Tongcheng School come back to life and made Chinese ancient prose in full flourish again. As the most famous statesman cultivated by Confucianculture, Zeng Guofan advocated that literary works should meet the essential requirements of ��developing national economy and giving relief to people����At the same time, as a man who epitomized the thoughts of classical literature, Zeng Guofan also emphasized that aesthetic features of literary works should in no case be neglected. Besides, Mr. Zeng still managed to propagate his poetic ideas in way of his own creative accomplishments and compiling some poetic selections for popular reading. His Poetry and Prose Selections formed a complete aesthetic system which included a series of aesthetic categories, incarnating his open-minded and broad view towards traditional literature.
