This thesis is a study on the correlation between sexual selection and aesthetic evolution, and it has a purpose to research a probability that the psychological mechanisms such as aesthetic senses and sensibilities has given by sexual selection of the ancient human ancestors. For this aim, this thesis referred Charles Darwin and David Buss and Geoffrey Miller. Charles Darwin formulated the sexual selection theory, and David Buss and Geoffrey Miller are evolutionary psychologists who elaborated the sexual selection theory after Darwin.
Darwin dealt with the problems of reproduction and sexual evolution by sexual selection theory, because they wasn't explained well by natural selection theory. Darwin explain as follows : ¡°since in such cases the males have acquired their present structure, not from being better fitted to survive in the struggle for existence, but from having gained an advantage over other males, and from having transmitted this advantage to their male offspring alone, sexual selection must here have come into action.¡± David Buss demonstrated the psychological mechanisms of human being concerning sexual evolution centering on the men and women¡¯s mating strategies. He discuss on the aesthetic preferences for health and commitment, appropriate ratio of body, symmetrical face. In the result, he emphasize that the innate character such as aesthetic senses has given by sexual selection.
According to Geoffrey Miller, even if the survivalist theory could take us from the world of natural history to our capacities for invention, commerce, and knowledge, it cannot account for the more ornamental and enjoyable aspects of human culture: art, music, sports, drama, comedy, and political ideals. He argue that the most distinctive aspects of our minds evolved largely through the sexual choices our ancestors made.
Through the study of this thesis, I arrived at a conclusion that their discussions are a convincing explanations for the aesthetic senses and sensibilities that human being has developed by sexual selection.
