    This study argueds for ¡°flourishing¡± as the overall and ultimate aim of liberal arts education at universities. Since the establishment of medieval universities, liberal arts education has been coupled with major education in higher education. Nevertheless, liberal arts education in Korean universities has been neglected compared with major education. Although interest in liberal arts education is increasing owing to the influence of government financial support projects and evaluations, it is also influenced by current trends, such as competency education. I believe that the fundamental reason for this phenomenon is the lack of awareness and discourse about the aim of liberal arts education. Specifically, the overall aim of liberal arts education is unclear. This article argues that the ultimate aim of liberal arts education is to promote students' flourishing, in line with the objective of cultivating humanity and the original pursuit of liberal arts education. First, the necessity of the overall aim of liberal arts education is reaffirmed by critically examining the argument about liberal arts education in Korea, centering on key issues; second, the relationship between flourishing and liberal arts education is specifically discussed through the views of DeNicola and Kraut. I discuss three areas, pursuing one's own flourishing, helping others to flourish, and background knowledge and understanding of flourishing, to explore how the aim of flourishing-based liberal arts education can be subdivided.
