    In this study, we fabricated a coplanar waveguide employing periodic 3D coupling structures (CWP3DCS) on a silicon substrate and investigated the loss and quality factor (Q-factor) characteristics using theoretical and experimental methods. According to the measured results for the loss characteristic, CWP3DCS demonstrated a good loss characteristic compared with the conventional transmission line. Concretely, the conventional transmission line with a length of ฮป/4 showed insertion loss values of 1.61โ€“2.46 dB in the frequency range of 10โ€“50 GHz, whereas the CWP3DCS showed insertion loss values of 0.715โ€“1.38 dB in the same frequency range. The Q-factor of the conventional transmission line was 3.3 at 30 GHz, whereas CWP3DCS exhibited Q-factor values of 6.0โ€“8.1. According to an analysis of equivalent circuits, a high value of 3D coupling capacitance improved the bypass characteristic, which greatly improved the loss characteristic of the proposed transmission line.
