This article presents a preliminary study on Karen Barad¡¯s primary philosophical position called ¡°agential realism,¡± mainly focusing on her 2007 book Meeting the Universe Halfway: Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning. It begins with a short introduction to Barad¡¯s notion of ¡°diffraction¡± and that of ¡°mattering,¡± which Barad introduced as methods but turned out to have epistemo-onto-ethical implications as well. Then it turns to the agential realism, firstly discussed in the context of the realism-social constructivism debate in the philosophy of science, then in relation to the notion of performativity in Judith Butler¡¯s sense. Also discussed is Niels Bohr's philosophy of quantum mechanics, mainly focussing on his notions of phenomenon and apparatus, which Barad appropriates to develop her own notion of ¡°posthuman agency.¡± We see how the agential realism seeks to overcome (and quite succeed in doing so) representationism and other dualistic premises like nature-culture or human- nonhuman dichotomy of the previous philosophy of science and/or feminist science studies.
