This paper is aimed to look into the reign of King Beopheung when Silla faced domestic and foreign political changes and he suggested to flourish Buddhist law in Silla. Previous studies have mainly discussed King Beopheung��s decision to promote Buddhism in terms of King��s authority reinforce or ideological approach in that Silla needed a new change to substitute the traditional belief. However, in these kinds of research, the gradual decision-making process surrounding King Beopheung��s decision has been overlooked to be discussed.
Considering the issue, the paper starts from the precondition that King Beophueng��s decision to flourishing of Buddhism would be associated with Silla��s political situation at that time. Firstly the paper focuses on Silla��s political situation before and immediately after King Beopheung��s enthronement. In particular, the state name and an honorific title amendment that both the King and Bureaucrat worked with show Silla��s endeavor to keep pace with a new period. However, the movement was far from the reality they sought to.
Acknowledging this reality, King Beopheung tried to push ahead Silla��s expansion more outward. Contrary to the King��s intention, Bureaucrat argued to devote their energies to reinforce national defense and to finish the system reformation that continued from the period of Maripgan. The controversy related to flourishing of Buddhism stemmed from the opinion difference between them about the direction of state affairs. Despite the opposition of Bureaucrat, the king led the political atmosphere with the martyrdom of Ichadon in order to break through this situation. Next, the King made some achievements to dispel the concerns of Bureaucrat.
The successful suggestion led by King Beopheung served as a good example for the future kings and Bureaucrats about what Silla should aim for, as well as the strengthening of the king��s authority or an ideological transformation in Silla. As a result, King Jinheung, the next king, could achieve territorial extension aggressively thanks to King Beopheung��s previous accomplishments.
