The story about the tragic lives and love of Yoon Sim-duk, a representative new woman of the 1920s and the first vocalist, and Kim Woo-jin, a genius playwright of modern theatrical history, has been told over 30 years from 1988 to 2019 through a play (1988), film (1991), musical (2013-2017), opera (2018), and drama (2019). It became an example of the most representative one source multi use in Korean art and culture. This study determines the characteristics of elements in the lives and deaths of Yoon and Kim that can be sympathized with today. The study also analyzes the representation of new women and variations in storytelling by genre.
The play was the first to be dramatized and provided the basic framework for all future works. Considering its popularity, Yoon Sim-duk was represented in film as a brilliant new woman who was objectified by the male gaze. The musical formed a new figurative relationship with two people and three personalities of Kim Woo-jin and Yoon Sim-duk, by creating a character who constructs a person reflecting the thoughts of Kim Woo-jin as a concrete figure and externalizes internal conflict. The TV drama focused on Kim Woo-jin, drawing heavily on the inside of the artist, but concentrating on melodrama hardened by love and dramatic death. These works show the limitations of repeating similar stories, which I hope will be recreated into more diverse works in the future using trans-media storytelling.
