Ancient people believed them as signs of possible future events and guessed or judged events of the future through the past, when some extraordinary events occurred. This is the very auguring and past events are the very prophecy. Here, prophecy is cause in relation of cause and effect. Therefore, auguring means skill to know effect, that is, result from cause in relation of cause and effect. Skill of auguring, that is, guessing result based on signs, is not built in a day. It is a result of knowledge accumulated through long experiences.
In the society of theocracy, augur played a role of governing people through oracle. Since then, a group specializing in fortune-telling was formed.
Among content in Samgukyusa(Èý‡øßzÊÂ), auguring and prophecy were focused on and four parts of king's prophecy, auguring of officer choosing lucky day, prophecy of animal fortune-telling, and analysis of augur were investigated. Vocabularies related to prophecy such as officer choosing lucky day, auguring shown on Samguk yusa(Èý‡øßzÊÂ) are 19 pieces. There are 14 pieces related to national situation where astrologer in charge of prophecy was involved. Private auguring was introduced 9 times. Auguring and prophecy shown on Samguk yusa was one form of belief widely spread in the society before inflow of then existing religion beyond the question whether auguring and prophecy are correct or not. And there was conflict between popular belief and higher religion of Buddhism and in the midst of conflict, prophecy and remedy were mobilized. If ¡ºSamguksagiÈý‡øÊ·Ó›¡» written before Samguk yusa described history focused on view of Confucian ethic and history, Samguk yusa introduces human life with warmth, and joys and sorrows as it is.
Intention without intention of this basic arousing is a strategy Ilyeon founded. The story through intention without intention moves our heart with more quiet and powerful impression. In Samguk yusa, we can find appearances where people in various classes from general public to king wonder about the future through Auguring and prophecy.
Ilyeon said about Auguring and prophecy in SamgukyusaÈý‡øßzÊÂ, "when mind corresponds to behavior in telling fortune, heaven moves. If not, heaven does not move, so called Ì“Ö‡." Thus, when augur and the other party have all extreme and unchanged mind, wish can come true. Further study would be needed to know influences of Auguring and prophecy on ruler as well as society in detail.
