There was a lot of interest and research on Hwang Jin-yi. However, understanding and evaluation of her should not be confined to the perspective of affection, and it is undesirable to lean toward the field of literature and art. There is a new need for a discussion that can clearly reveal the identity of Hwang Jin-yi as a unique existence that transcends the time and space of the mid-Joseon society.
Hwang Jin-yi was both emotional and rational, flexible yet not losing her firmness. While embracing beautiful and elegant values, she struggled to reach a simple and truthful world. Also, while criticizing society, she was not stingy in introspecting herself. In particular, in order to meet Hwang Jin-yi, the standard had to be ¡°a noble person with high character and graceful elegance,¡± and while Kim Taek-yeong said that Hwang Jin-yi¡¯s work was hard to believe, he said, ¡°I can¡¯t help but deal with Hwang Jin-yi¡¯s clear thoughts and outstanding poetry.¡± As much as that, intelligence and taste are important to her, and in this respect, an approach from a combined perspective has been attempted.
It is necessary to highlight the uniqueness of Hwang Jin-yi in the framework of the combination. In a society where status and order are valued, Hwang Jin-yi courageously chose to become a gisaeng and behaved confidently under the name of 'Myeongwol'. As a woman, Hwang Jin-yi took the initiative of practicing love and confronting sexual discrimination, such as proposing cohabitation to men she liked and boldly pointing out disapproving attitudes. Hwang Jin-yi tried to live a pure and unchanging life as a human against the inhuman and anti-life reality. In short, she is a subjective being who led a creative life calling herself ¡®Songdo Samjeol¡¯.
In this paper, I tried to discuss Hwang Jin-yi's subjective aspect in a way of combining gisaeng, feminine, and human aspects, using 6 Sijos and 4 Chinese poems of Hwang Jin-i as data.
