This thesis tries to study the spacial characteristics of Zhouyuan in Western Zhou history, analyzing many bronze vessels and their inscriptions unearthed from the caches in the region. Although many scholars have worked on Zhouyuan, most of their studies seem to have been focused on specific issues such as the search for the pre-dynastic capital of Zhou.
However, this study pursues a synthetic approach toward the many bronze caches and their contents. First, as the external approach, an archaeological analysis deals with the caches themselves, focusing on the excavated situations, the layouts the location of artifacts, their quantity, and the classification of the artifacts. This analysis distinguishes the caches of Zhouyuan from those of other regions, proving that the "theory of social change" would be more appropriate than other proposed theories on the production of the Zhouyuan caches in the late Western Zhou period.
Second, the internal approach relies on the analysis of bronze inscriptions from the caches in Zhouyuan. This leads to study various social aspects of the people in the region such as the lineage relations, the marriage system, the lawsuits, the inheritance, the land ownership, the official positions, and so on. The proposed conclusions from the analysis are as follows: 1) Except for the people of Zhou, groups of people formerly affiliated with Shang resided in Zhouyuan; 2) various marriage alliances supported the sovereignty of Zhouyuan and the Western Zhou state as well; 3) The Zhouyuan region was divided by various lineages and sub-lineages based on the lands they owned. 4) Several official titles such as scribes (shi ʷ) and three supervisors (sanyousi ����˾) indicate that the people with these titles assumed important positions in the central government, enjoying relatively higher social status.
Therefore, it is reasonable to propose that Zhouyuan was the home of many prime lineages in the Western Zhou dynasty.
