During the age of the Joseon Dynasty which was based on the theory of Neo-Confucianism, many books related to Neo-Confucianism were positively imported from China and then released into the Korean version by movable-type printing, which promoted the diffusion of Neo-Confucianism. Therefore, the study of Neo-Confucianism in Joseon Dynasty was extended from Zhu Xi`s Sishujizhu to all the works of Zhu Xi.
Yi Hwang(1501��1570), also called Toegye, recognized that Zhuzidaquan and Zhuziyulei were the primary textbooks in understanding the thought of Zhu Xi, so he took a lot of trouble to study them. In order to provide a clue for the later scholars to study Zhuzi, he selected some chapters from numerous letters in Zhuzidaquan and condensed them into Zhuzishujieyao, the outline and explanations of the works of Zhu Xi. This book later became the required textbook for the scholars of Joseon Dynasty and provided a clue for the later scholars to study the theory of Toegye Shool and Neo-Confucianism.
Inspired by the spirit of Yi Hwang in compiling Zhuzishujieyao, An Jeongbok(1712��1791), also called Sunam, who inherited Toegye��s theory, compiled Zhuziyuleijieyao, the abridgements of thematic discourses of Zhu Xi. Shunam compiled this book when he assisted the crown prince of that time in studying in East Palace from June ,1775, the 51th year of King Yeongj��s reign, to the next February. Zhuziyuleijieyao, which is made up of eight volumes, contains about 17% of the core content of Zhuziyulei. Today, volume 2, 3,4,6 and 8 are conserved in the National Central Library, while volume 1 and volume 7 are conserved in Liutang Library of Korea University. Unfortunately, nobody knows where volume 5 is.
