Bong-Sung-Sa(���}��) has a tale that King Sinmun tried to lay a revengeful spirit of ShinChung(����) to rest by building the temple in 685. However, the real reason for building the temple was to honor General Kim YuShin(������) who led the unification of the Three Kingdoms.
Mang-Deok-Sa(������) built in the same year has a tale that it intended to hide Sa-Cheon-Wang-Sa(��������) from a Chinese envoy. According to Samguk-Sagi(����ʷӛ), the temple later become a place where Silla people wished for long life of Chinese Emperors. The story, however, is seriously distorted.
The true purpose of the temple was to pay tribune to King Muyeol, or Taijong of Silla(̫��������). Unfortunately, Mang-Deok-Sa had a fatal problem with the two skyrocketed wooden pagodas. The thirteen-story pagodas shook violently for days, making people believe that the twin pagodas were fighting each other. Thus, Silla had to abandon the temple and make the true meaning of the temple secret. Later, people started to relate the shaking of the pagodas with the unstable political states in China. Thus, a story was formed that the temple is related to the Chinese Emperors, not to the Taijong of Silla. Such an embroidered story was spreaded to China and recorded in history books. Bong-Deok-Sa(�����) built in 707 was the new temple to replace Mang-Deok-Sa.
