This study analyzes animals~featuring satires among bu literature of the 17th century to show that the satires served as a medium of social criticism. The analysis is expected to contribute to elucidating characteristics of bu literature of the 17th century.
To investigate the role of animal~featuring satires in bu literature, we chose 17th century as it was a prolific period for bu literature.
Among them, we examined 11 works of bu that featured animals.
Meanwhile, the objects of criticism in bu literature can be divided into political circumstances, specific figures or social classes, or overall social condition. And the reasons for criticism are mainly threefolds: to urge self~reflection for readers and their social class, to provide self~consolation through a lament of reality, and to propose solutions to resolve problems. Stories can be also classified by the class of featured animals.
We could verify critical voices in works of bu of the 17th century that featured animals. Quite a few works of bu contain self~reflection of the ruling class, as well as sharp criticism over the society. Such reflection and criticism could be found in animal~featuring works of bu.
