Won Cheon-seok (ÔªÌìåa 1330-?) is a confucianist who lived during late Koryo and early Choson. In this period, Confucian intellectuals more and more heavily criticized theory and practice of Koryo Buddhism. Despite the contemporary atmosphere of excluding Buddhism and strong identity as a Confucianist, Won Cheon-seok accepted Buddhism as a religion and established Buddhistic view of life such as samsara or retributive justice. He also was a Buddhist who built extensive knowledge in both Kyo(Buddhist linguistic teaching) and Seon(Buddhist meditation) and actually practiced Buddhist meditation. Won Cheon-seok agreed with the theory of Yanbing (û) that three teachings (Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism) share one truth, stuck to the perspective that three teachings are essentially same in focusing on nature, and pursued the ultimate stage free from any discrimination. Especially not like the theory that three chinese saints are three Buddhist saints incarnates, the theory that three teachings are essentially same was not based on illogical opinion. It was based on his understanding of doctrines of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, and his discovery of their coessentiality. Therefore, his theory can be estimated as reasonable in its way.
