· 연구 주제: 사이비 종교범죄의 현황과 특징을 살펴보고 현재 대응법규에 미비한 점은 없는지 검토하여 효과적인 대응방안을 모색하고자 한다.
· 연구 배경: 사이비 종교범죄는 종교로 위장하고 종교를 빌미로 성범죄나 폭력 및 사기범죄를 일으키는 범죄조직으로 전세계적으로 분포되어 있어 사회문제로 대두되고 있다. 사이비 종교범죄는 기독교, 천주교, 불교, 이슬람교 등의 모든 종교가 대상이며 교주 등의 범죄자가 개인 혹은 집단으로 위장하여 사이비 종교조직을 만들어 헌법에 의해 규정된 종교의 자유 원칙에 따라 범죄행위에 대한 수사왿� 처벌 이외의 직접적인 통제를 받지 않는다. 다만 언론이나 주위 소문 등으로 교세나 세력이 위축되기도 하지만 대부분 계속 범죄를 저지르고 있다는 것이 심각한 사회문제이다. 사이비 종교범죄는 교주왿� 같은 특정 소수의 인원만을 위해 움직이고 활동하는 성향을 보이며 종교적 맹신을 이용하여 사람을 세뇌시켜 가정을 파괴하거나 강간, 금품갈취, 사기 등의 강력범죄 등을 유발하거나 주도하기 때문에 사회의 안녕과 질서를 파괴한다. 사이비 종교는 기독교, 천주교, 불교 등 기존 종교에서 떨어져 나온 경우가 많아서 겉으로는 그 모체인 종교왿� 비슷해 보이지만 실제로는 모태 종교의 교리를 위반하고 신도들을 착취하며 사회에 악영향을 끼칠 형태로 재해석한 종교 아닌 종교로서 이기적이고 반사회적인 범죄집단이다.
· 선행연구왿�의 차이점: 지금까지 교회왿� 이단 사이비왿� 기독교 이단 범죄에 대한 문제왿� 법적 논증을 위한 신학적 고찰에 대한 연구는 있었지만 사이비 종교범죄에 대한 연구는 거의 없었으며 미비하다.

· 공헌점 및 기대효과: 사이비 종교범죄를 미연에 방지하는 효과적이고 적절한 대응책을 제시하여 반사회적 범죄의 범죄예방적인 측면에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다, 사이비 종교범죄를 예방하기 위해서는 종교인은 물론 국민들의 지속적인 관심이 필요하며 사이비 종교단체나 집단 및 개인, 사이비 교주나 가족, 부역자들과 사이비 종교집단이 자행하는 범죄 전략과 수법을 체계적으로 연구하고 분석하여 비판할 수 있는 전문연구 인력의 양성이 필요하다. 또한 국민들로 하여금 사이비 종교에 대한 경각심을 갖게 하며 사이비 종교범죄에 대한 위험성과 폐해를 제대로 환기할 필요가 있다.
