This study identifies the postposition i in ppuni and analyzes how i is related to the grammaticalization of ppuni by attempting to solve problems raised by the composition of ppuni from a new perspective. To this end, Korean language data for the period between the 15th and 20th centuries and the modern Korean corpus were examined.
Therefore, since the auxiliary particle ppun, which was once known to take only ida or anida as its predicate, can be combined with a grammatical case postposition, this study infers that the function of ppuni has changed. Initially, ppuni was the syntactic composition between the auxiliary postposition ppun and grammatical case postposition i. Subsequently, it underwent grammaticalization and finally became a morphologic composition. Due to such etymological characteristics, ppuni is different from ppun+i, which is a simple syntactic composition that can be placed only in the position of a subject or complement.
This study indicates that ppuni functions as an auxiliary postposition similar to bakke that can be combined with almost all other elements. The auxiliary postposition neun and man can serve the subjective or objective case on being placed in the relevant position. However, the subject or object supported by ppuni is not found in the relevant sentence. It is part of an alternative set (i.e., other things) that is excluded from the selected focus. In addition, this study highlights that ppuni can be considered a negative polarity item because it is used with a negative expression in the same clause, permitting such a negative expression syntactically.
