This case study describes the woodblocks of Buddhist scriptures published at Unheungsa Temple in Ulju in the late Joseon Dynasty. We will examine the background of Unheungsa Temple ability to publish woodblocks and the current status of each woodblock. Through this, we analyze the woodblock makers to reveal the publishing system of Unheungsa Temple woodblocks, and try to understand the reality of Unheungsa Temple woodblocks, which has been insufficiently researched so far.
Unheungsa Temple has been making woodblocks of Buddhist scriptures since the 17th century, producing 676 woodblocks of 16 types for about 41 years. This was possible because the Joseon Dynasty was chaotic at the time, but it had all the elements necessary for woodblock production. The produced woodblock is currently in the collection of the Tongdosa Temple Seongbo Museum. The woodblock of Unheungsa Temple show little change in the characters and participants who led the engraving. Therefore, it shows similar bibliographical characteristics except for <the Diamond Sutra.>, which is based on the original manuscript of Wongaksa Temple.
In the latter part of the produced woodblock volume, the characters who participated in the woodblock production were described in detail. Through this, it was possible to know the woodblock production system of Unheungsa Temple at that time. As a result of categorizing the number and roles of participants in the production of 16 woodblocks published by Unheungsa Temple, a total of 39 participants participated more than 5 times and 31 participants participated in less than 4 times. About 60 participants played a key role in the woodblock production of Unheungsa Temple.
At that time, Unheungsa Temple had the necessary conditions to produce woodblocks, namely, experts including gaksu, scholars with extensive knowledge of the contents of Buddhist books, monks in charge of planning and working on woodblocks, and human and material resources such as donors and donors. have all of Based on this, large-scale woodblocks could be produced. Therefore, woodblock production could be operated systematically and efficiently.
