There have been distortions and stigmatizations about old age in the past, but the gerontophobia with the fear of increasing elderly population today is more serious. The gerontophobia becomes more difficult to resist when it spreads secretly on a social and cultural level than when it explicitly reveals the problem with efficiency in economic areas. The spread and solidifying of negative images about old age turns the old into a title with a negative connotation, which works as a kind of ideology.
This negation and distortion of old age leads to a resistant movement to think of old age as optimistic which emphasizes the vitality and productivity that new old age will bring. However, the 'successful aging' which the optimism suggests can be a different aspect of distortion and a two-sided version of the coin. For the optimism model tries to put aging on the middle-aged extension against the paradigm of economic values, namely productivity and efficiency, and the independence of self-identity und therefore ultimately has limitations to deny aging.
Then the truth will be neither useful nor useless, but somewhere in between. Old age is a process of finding oneself between resistance and resignation. Old age, as the time for us to live and to have to live in the world, is just a limited time of life given to us, just like in the days of youth and middle-aged years. This old age becomes special only by fully showing that death, which we try to ignore continuously until we get old, is not the outer boundary of life but is inextricably related to life and is the qualitative content of life.
