Gokpo Yi Neung-yoon, the leading Confucian scholar in Yeongnam region during late Joseon and the Japanese occupation, is a descendant of Yi Eon-jeok and the main line of the family clan academic tradition. Also, he carried on the legacy of the Yeongnam School Byeongpa through academic discipleship and marriage. Upon this background he immersed himself in academic disciplines while interacting with numerous prominent figures. As an acting intellectual, he led the anti-Japanese struggle, the Gyeongju National Debt Redemption Movement, but did not participate in the First Confucian Independence Movement(Paris Jangseo) due to Yeongnam conflicts. On the other hand he intervened in the Jeokseosibi and Yeongnam¡¯s three major disputes, helping maintain order in rural communities while defending his school and continuing the family clan academic tradition. Later on, he became the most prominent community leader in the entire Yeongnam area and the director of Seowon, including Oksan, Dosan and Dodong. Notwithstanding, he did not prevent his descendants¡¯ transition from traditional Confucian scholars to intellectuals of the modern Western-style system. As such, this study attempts to reorganize the course of his life, and to be a facilitator in the studying of Gokpo Yi Neung-yoon.
