The thesis examined Hogu materials and family succession of Lee Gwi-jae's family in Samcheok area in the 18~19th century. And the author tried to investigate characteristics and meaning of Hogu materials. Hogu materials of Lee Gwi-jae's family are extant for the period from 1741 to 1858 - 117 years through four generations. If including the fourth item of Lee Gwi-jae, succession of family through 7 generations can be identified with the Hogu materials. 20 old documents in total are extant in Lee Gwi-jae's family - one is letter of appointment given by king, other 19 are Hogu materials. Two of them are related to Lee Gwi-jae who lived in Jeongseon while remaining 17 are related to Lee Gwi-jae and his descendants who lived in Samcheok.
JunHogu document in Samcheok shows ��Samcheokbu Jeonjoon(���켩��׼)�� which is a unusual case. ��Samcheokbu Jeonjoon�� is also shown in a JunHogu of Lee Gwi-jae's family. It can be said that 'HoguJeonjoon' means activity related to JunHogu. In this regard, working level person in charge of census registration job would probably be associated to issuance of JunHogu. ��Samcheokbu Jeonjoon�� had locality as activity of working level person in charge of document issuance job in the region or petty official was handed. And it can be assumed that working level persons in charge of census registration applied for Jeonjoon when they had difficulty in identifying information related to census registration due to some reasons like lost or loss of census registration ledger, and received JunHogu.
And Hogu materials of Lee Gwi-jae's family frequently show change in Jikyeok(š��, social status) and title for woman. Especially, Lee Gwi-jae probably was not Yangban when he lived in Jeongseon. Since he moved to Samcheok, he tried to get a higher social status through falsification of Hogu material and purchasing of Gongmyeongcheop. After he moved to Samcheok, Lee Gwi-jae's Jikyeok was not shown on census registration. He also called his wife Anjoi(����ʷ). As Lee sodasi, son of Lee Gwi-jae became Jeolchoong Janggoon(���n��܊), title of his wife and daughter-in -law was changed from civilian woman(��Ů) to last name(��). Jikyeok of his sons was changed from Boin(����) to Eopyoo(�I��). Since then, title of his wife and daughter-in -law was changed to Han Ssi(�n��), Park Ssi(����), Kim Ssi(����). But after death of Lee sodasi, title of daughter-in -law was revised to last name again. After Lee Seong-dae(��ɴ�), the son of Lee sodasi became Gasundaeboo(���ƴ��), title of woman was changed to Ssi(��) again. Accordingly, the family continued to get higher social status as Lee Gwi-jae, Lee sodasi, Lee Seong-dae bought Gongmyeongcheop. It shows that to get higher social status through buying Gongmyeongcheop requires continued efforts.
Finally, it was identified that JunHogu of Lee Won-bae(��Ԫ��) in 1882 was made by illegal use of item on the 4th article for Lee Jang-han and his wife Bae Ssi. Lee Won-bae had lived in 1-Ri, Dosang-Myeon while Lee Jang-han had lived in 2-Ri, Dosang-Myeon. They had lived in same area. Lee Won-ba��s illegal use appeared some 20 years later from last Hogudanja(���چ���) of Lee Jang-han. It seems that JunHogu was issued according to rule because it shows official seal(��ӡ) of Samcheokbu, Seoap(��Ѻ) of province governor(��ʹ), Juheopgaeyin(�ܒ���ӡ). Illegal use of Hogu which made almost same area and similar time makes assume many possibilities. Maybe Lee Won-bae was a member of the family of Lee Gwi-jae. Probably Lee Jang-han was involved in such illegal use directly or indirectly. This is also said that he was conspired with working level persons related to Hogu.
Thus Hogu materials of Lee Gwi-jae's family in Samcheok area in the 18~19th century have uniqueness of showing ��SamcheokbuJeonjoon��. And the Hogu materials have an important meaning because efforts to get higher social status for common people and humble people in the later period of Joseon can be catched through Hogu materials which show Jikyeok and change of title for woman. In addition, Hogu document of Lee Won-bae which was made illegally can be examined in regards to Lee Gwi-jae's family.
