For the long time, modern Shanghai has been the contested object of two distinct interpretations about colonialism and modernity. Symbolic landscapes of modern Shanghai have been removed, utilized, and contested over the political changes of China. This paper examines how the memory of modern Shanghai has been changed from the shameful to the proud for the critical historic moments. Specially, this paper explores how modern Shanghai nostalgia is socially constructed and consumed in post-reform China. It shows the complexity of the place memory in the socialist postcolonial city.????
