The process and the content of funeral of the contemporary religions in Korea is generally similar and without much significance. On the contrary, the Unification Church considers funeral as one of its core practices and labels it ��the sublimation ceremony.�� Although the actual ceremony itself is no different from a typical funeral, the purpose is different. The Divine Principle, the Unification Thought, and the teachings of Rev. Sun Myung Moon on life, death and the spiritual world serve as the background for the unique funeral practice of the Unification Church.
First, the unique title and atmosphere of the funeral ceremony attract the interests of many people. Unlike the typical picture of a simple and gloomy funeral, that of the Unification Church is rather vibrant often decorated with colorful flowers. The reason behind such difference is the unique perspective the Unification Church has on life, death and the after life. In addition to viewing death as the end of a life, the Unification Church considers it a process in which a life can enter a new and higher world. Therefore, the sublimation ceremony, where the physical and the spiritual world meet, can be seen as a special mechanism by which paradise on the earth and in heaven can be achieved.
