    Physical activity is one of the facets of lifestyle that is lacking in most students' life and a factor that has been considered to affect academic performance. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between academic performance and physical activities pursued in students' daily leisure. Three academic variables (average hours of study per day, average number of absences per class, and grade point average) and five types of physical leisure activities (ball sports, martial arts, track/field sports, individual exercise, and extreme sports) were used for the analysis. Also five non-physical leisure (TV watching, drinking, computer games, SNS, and reading) were included for the comparative purpose. Data were drawn from students majoring in tourism in a university in Kyungsangbuk-do region. 234 students participated in the study of which 226 were used in the study. The analysis was carried out separately for male and female students as sex has been proved to be an important variable in the relation of physical activities and academic performance in prior studies. Cluster analysis revealed that male students fell under two categories which were named mid- and low-achievement group respectively, while female students under three categories each of which was labeled low-, high-, and mid-achievement group. For the male students, no significant difference was found in leisure activities between the academic profiles while for their female counterparts there was significant differences in leisure activities depending on the academic profiles. Further analysis for the female students indicated greater participation in individual exercise and less participation in TV watching, computer game, and SNS among the higher academic achievement group, indicating a positive association of academic performance with physical leisure and negative association with non-physical leisure. Overall the result is consistent with earlier studies in that there is positive relationship between academic performance and physical activities and such a relationship is pronounced to female students. Finally the implication of the study was discussed.
