After the Japanese annexation of Korea and the loss of national sovereignty in the late Joseon period, there existed a growing consciousness of the national crisis. During this period of crisis, Seo Seok-hwa published the ��Gyeongseolyupyeon�� by carefully selecting and compiling the doctrines of Confucianism that had been explicated by Yi Hwang, Yi Hyeon-il, Yi Sang-jeong, and Ryu Chi-myeong. This study confirms the purpose of the book and examines the characteristics of the Chinese Classics that had been expounded by the Hakbong School. When compiling the ��Gyeongseolyupyeon��, Seo Seok-hwa intended to suggest that the whole nation needed something which could play a pivotal role in overcoming the national crisis. Seo Seok-hwa also attempted to revive the Hakbong school with which he was academically involved, as he inherited and developed the Chinese Classics that had been explained by and handed down for generations in the Hakbong school. Moreover, he centered on the idea of respect [Jing, ��] explicated by the Hakbong school, and stood against different schools that pursued practicalities or erroneously interpreted the Chinese classics. Finally, Seo Seok-hwa sought to promote national consciousness for the public to put his idea into practice.
