This paper applies the Relevance Principle, the Relevance theory, to analyze the functions of the discourse marker ��Nishuo�� in Chinese.
Drawing on a clear contextual understanding from a selected drama as a reference, the study investigates how native Chinese speakers employ ��Nishuo�� in various situations. The analysis reveals two primary functions: ��Passing the Speaking Turn�� and ��Engaging the Listener.�� The former involves the speaker seamlessly transitioning the floor to the listener, while the actual meaning of ��Nishuo�� is retained. The latter entails the speaker involving the listener in their judgment or situation, encouraging them to perceive the scenario from the speaker��s perspective.
This serves to create contextual effects, allowing the listener to accept the speaker��s judgment, understand the speaker��s situation, empathize, and acknowledge any grievances expressed by the speaker. Speakers predominantly use the discourse marker ��Nishuo�� when seeking understanding from the listener and accepting their opinions, especially in situations involving ��unwanted events,�� ��unexpected occurrences,�� or events that conflict with the speaker��s judgment. In such instances, ��Nishuo�� enables the listener to promptly infer the speaker��s intention, facilitating smooth communication.
