The purpose of this article is to trace the process of acceptance of Western logic education in Korea during the transition period to the modern era, along with the question of when such education began. Logic was first introduced on two levels in East Asia. The first form of Western logic introduced in East Asia was Francois Frutado¡¯s ¡°Myeongri Tam,¡± a transformation of Aristotle¡¯s logic. This led to the introduction of other forms of logic, such as the introduction of Bacon¡¯s ¡°New Organ (Novum Organum)¡± by Protestant teachers in the 19th century. The traces of these origins can be found in John Fryer¡¯s What Must Be Known about Logic. In contrast, studies on the acceptance of logic in Korea are insignificant. The origins of current logic education can be traced to The Introduction of Logic, a Korean textbook for logic studies by Bernheisel, an American missionary and professor of philosophy at Union Christian College (Soongsil College) in Pyongyang. This indicates that education concerning Western philosophy and logic was conducted by Westerners from before the beginnings of philosophy education at Keijo Imperial University (Kyungsung Imperial University) and is another example of the transplantation and transformation of Western thought in the period of modern transition.
