The purpose of this study is to analyze Kim Si-seup and Sung Hyun¡¯s discourse on ghosts and recognition of lemures, and to compare the both sides.
Their discourse on ghosts was against superstition and amoral which had been prevalent in 15th century. They should be the purpose of Confucian enlightenment, and took on the basis of Neo-Confucian theory of ghosts. Kim¡¯s discourse on ghosts was very theoretical article. Sung¡¯s article on ghosts was descriptive and concrete.
Next, their discourse on lemures compared with stories on ghosts. For lemures Kim Si-seup took attitude of theoretical negation, but recognized meaning of existence in his fictional narrative. Sung Hyun described realistic for lemures, but He denied it¡¯s meaning of existence. Kim recognized and utilized the discursive differences of discourse and stories on ghosts. Sung did not understand cause and purposes of lemures.
