Most of research on the issue of identity in Malaysia has been focused either on conflict among diverse ethnic groups or on contestation between ethnic identity and national identity. How - ever, people in Malaysia do not only come into conflict with each other but learn to coexist with people of difference. Daily practice of coexisting is to be understood as a daily strategy of coexistence or practice of ‘negotiative identity’. Such practice is actually what has made Malaysia as it is now and it, I argue, deserves much more attention by researchers. While the term ‘negotiative identity’ can be also explained in the similar perspective of construction - ist perspective of identity, it yes has its distinctive aspect: while constructionist perspective on identity focuses on how identity is constructed and reconstructed, ‘negotiative identity’ perspective focuses not only on the identification process of individual but only on agency of individual to reconstruct group’s identity
