    In this study, I examine the unique characteristics of antar─bhava reflected in the theory of sa?s─ra in Buddhism by paying close attention to two interrelated points: (a) Vasubandhu¨s distinct theoretical position in the Buddhist doctrines, and (b) antar─bhava described in the Abhidharmako?abh─?ya Chapter Lokanirde?a (弊g瞳). In so doing, this study illustrates that antar─bhava appeared in the history of Buddhism as a new entity in the cycle of birth, life and death. The emergence of antar─bhava, I thus indicate, enabled to extend the thoughts of Buddhism that conflate heterogeneous beings such as karma, no-self, and sa?s─ra. Buddhism, by virtue of the emergence and development of antar─bhava, was established and flourished as the unique thoughts that noticeably differ from other religious doctrines.
