The main purpose of this thesis is to find its historical significance and value in relation to the past and recent place names, which are co-existed in Sejong City. First of all, Sejong City's place names contain traces of the life and culture of its people, and we looked at the linguistic features. They reflected the tradition, life and culture of the people who had lived in this area. First, they identified old words and obsolete word that could show the appearance of the old Korean life. Second, it reflects the regional dialect and phonology variations. Third, the borrowed notation with Chinese characters was confirmed through the native Korean place names.
Sejong City, a new city, has recently been given new place names. It also reflects traditional place names, which have the following features. First, the statutory name and the village name were specialized in the native Korean language connected with the Great King Sejong the Great, the name of a large city. Second, considering the historical history of place names, some traditional Chinese characters were used in the statutory name. Third, 23 place names were used in the original Korean names, which were unique among the existing place names. Fourth, a large number of great works were used to promote the formation of a new city through a large public contest. Fifth, the place names are given using words associated with the characteristics of life district.
Despite the inflection point of designation of Sejong City's place names as a result of new city development, have the historical meaning with the past and the present. Accordingly, the new place names are expected to have historicality and traditionality as a result of the accumulated lives of local people.
