With his 463 poems, Sebo Lee is evaluated as one of the greatest poets
in the history of Sijo. Since Prof. Donghyuck Jin who first found Sebo Lee's
poems, a number of scholars have obtained substantial outcomes from their
researches in various aspects. In the meanwhile, there have been a couple
of misunderstanding in those Sijo poems. Therefore, this article amis at
reviewing those fallacies and suggesting solutions.
There has been unreasonable analysis of his 100 love sijo poems, insisting
that 'love affair', the main theme of Sebo Lee's sijo poems is a taboo to the
aristocratic class and thus, broke the social norm of the medieval age.
However, it can be said to be a superficial approach when you check how
the people in the 19th century understood gisaengs and their culture as the
love affairs between Sebo Lee and gisaengs were overtly accepted by the
society in the 19th century. Boasting manliness of a man of romantic taste
was envied in the period. Therefore, the excellence of Sebo Lee should be
found in the fact that he sang his everyday affairs including love affairs with
gisaengs in so many sijo poems.
It is clear that all his anthologies except Poong-a were published to give
to others. Poong-a Byuljip, one of unbound books without covers was not the
one produced in the process of making Poong-a. It was supposed to be a
separate one but couldn't be finished. Specifically, some poems numbered 68
through 129 in Poong-a Byuljip are exactly same as those 6 through 67. It
shows that he intended to make books out of those poems to give gisaengs.
However, it seems that he did not plan to circulate those books in bars or gisaengs' houses, but he hoped his loving gisaengs to sing his poems at the
party he held.
Sebo Lee preferred hosting parties where his poems were sung to joining
those with top entertainers. Accordingly, it is almost impossible for Minyoung
Ahn and Sebo Lee to have social relationship as Ahn pursuing the top-notch
arts under the patronage of the people of the power needed not try to enhance
the relationship with Lee. Considering that there was a big gap between Lee
and Ahn in their philosophy of arts, the ungrounded guesswork is to be
avoided.
