This paper discusses the French war correspondent Maurice Chanteloup's memoir of North Korea during the Korean War: North Korean POW Camps. Previous academic discussions on Korean War POW's memoirs have mostly been around anti-communist POW memoir, focused on the significance as anti-communist texts to represent the memories of the Cold War. The present paper, however, investigates memoirs that record the Korean War from external, or third-person, perspectives. Chanteloup's memoir records a war correspondent's experiences at a North Korean POW camp represented from the journalistic views, narrating his experiences based on his personal memories of universal sentiments. In this sense, this memoir depicts factual details of the 'microscopic' war. From an objective point of view, Chanteloup states situations in which he was experiencing firsthand the realities of communism at the exact time of North Korea's invasion of the South, representing the other side of a war concealed by anti-communist ideology. His representation of the devastating war is of his personal memories from the aspect of individual life and the ethics of war, rather than a public record of ideological mass memories. He openly makes critical comments on the US POW's, 'self-attested Interpol,' and points out the falsehood of the US engagement in the Korean War, revealing the French intelligentsia��s self-conscious aloofness from the USA. Reflecting his European perspective towards Russia, the key driver of the Cold War, Chanteloup writes on the realities and tensions around North Korea, China, and Russia. Chanteloup's memoir is significant in his illumination of the Korean War with perspectives that, while retaining the European third-party perspective, goes beyond the boundary of the US-Russia's Cold War.
