Sojeon, Son Jaehyung(1903-1981) is revered as a great teacher of 20th century Korean calligraphy after Chusa Kim Jeong-hee (1786-1856). Born at the time of the collapse of the Korean Empire, he sublimated the nation's loyal thoughts and innate sentiments of love and enjoy the arts. Based on the Jeonseo and Yeseo writing style, the classical writing style of Han-gul, he developed a Korean font called Sojeon Calligraphy. In addition, he created the term calligraphy instead of the word "Seodo," which remains of Japanese colonial rule after liberation, and made it an official name.
The Soseon font has its source in Tonggukjinche of Wonkyo, Lee Kwangsa. The Soseon font has no problem in letter strokes and composition and it shows the quality of art that is flexible and elegant, with various shapes in the form of letters. In the Jeonseo and Yeo writing style, he worked hard on Gapsgol, Geumseokmun, and Goyeo.
In particular, Chusa was a teacher and with a well-organized, clean and neat stroke, and a natures and a full font. Huangseo seems to have left the world behind Huangshangok, strong beauty of bones and sines of Ahn Jin Kyung, and Mibul's rhythmic strokes harmonized. Overall, he expressed a clear and elegant style through vigorous muscle, bone, and meat and rigid flexibility. Choseo has a fast, bouncy style. Meanwhile, Soseon focused on the strengths of the classical writing style of Han-Gul and combined it with a genius, modern sense of form and novel ideas. Thus, it was sublimated into a unique writing style of Han-gul, pure and humorous. This is significant in that it has not only provided a foundation for the development of writing style of Han-gul, but also created a new space area in modern calligraphy. In particular, it is the world's largest monument, and it is a monument that was written in a mixture of Han-gul and Chinese characters, commemorating the victory of Byeokpajin War on Chungmu Gong. It is a representative work of the highest standing of the beauty of Great Art by honing various of the writing style of the class.
Sojeon also gave positive guidance and passion to foster his students. Some of the most prominent students are Kim Gi-seung(1909 - 2000), Ha Nam-ho(1926 - 2007), and Seo Hee-hwan(1934 - 1998). They were following the teachings of their teacher, whom each made new attempts to build their own calligraphy world. As such, his aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy and art stage continue to form a huge trend in the Korean calligraphy industry.
