The Russian Ark is about the eternity of space which is the configuration of
time. The space is where there is the aura of cultural and traditional art. In
such a place, the eternity of art leads to the salvation of humans. Therefore, the
museum, the space of the movie, revives old times accumulated in a space
according to a traveller¡¯s memories, and the director demolishes the boundary
between shorts, describes it as a continuity of a space and connects it with the
present and future, using most modernist digital technology.
In this work, the space that the director recognizes ultimately is an infinite
space where a variety of existential time layers are piled up. The space is not
separated by physical or mechanical power, but is a continuing space where
there are various times of life and death.
In addition, as a physical space, the space of the museum weakens the
reappearance of power from a modern viewpoint. It also rejects montage and
pursues continuity in a place with a single camera. In line with ¡®a montage in
the frame,¡¯ it leads to the reorganization of a space based on visual elements.
Unlike modern images in the appearance of digital media technology that
aim at the weakening of narrative, the fragmentation of images, the collage
trend, the absence or demolition of montage and the demolition of viewpoint,
the director seeks for the existence value of his art activities from traditional
things. The weakening of narrative is not for strengthening the image, but for
offering information about events at a specific historical moment of time.
Ultimately, aesthetic subjects are more important than expression types to
the director. Therefore, technology functions as a simple tool to produce a
meaning that the director wants. That is, the space of the museum is skillfully,
mechanically reorganized as the Russian Ark by the director, and the Russian
Ark expands spiritual and humane salvation and eternity to the continuity of
mechanical frames. Finally, modern authority, collision through the separation
of shorts, and the connection of fragments are intentionally eliminated from
the museum, and the meaning of eternal salvation is strengthened through
cultural art.
