This study aims to investigate Spinoza's ethics in his Ethics and discuss some issues on his ethics. Therefore, the study inquires about human bondage, its causes, and the way to freedom. Then the study discusses three topics. They are the practicality of reason, the compatibility of determinism and freedom, and the fairness of Spinoza's identity as a ethical egoist.
Concerning the latter work, this study answers as follows. 1. Reason in Spinoza is the ability to infer adequate ideas from other adequate ideas. And adequate ideas produce active affects which have the motivational force. Therefore, reason has the force. 2. Spinoza is a necessitarian, but not a fatalist. Man can participate in the causation of his actions. And man is a expression of immanent God. So human activity or freedom is possible. 3. Because of Spinoza's discussion on 'the intellectual love of God' in Ethics V, it is difficult to regard Spinoza as a ethical egoist.
