This paper deals with the relationship between ramen and modernity. Especially, the aim of this paper is to pursue of identifying modernity, which is embedded in ramen as a fast food or an instant food. To do this, this paper takes two strategies; firstly, the identification of general modernity, secondly, of the Korean modernity, which are reflected in ramen. First of all, focusing the special emphasis of the function rather than the meaning, the loss of aura, the inclination towards inclusive identity, this article examines very closely the manner in which these are inherently intertwined with the ramen as an invented food in modern era as well. Next, considering the ramen as a tool by which can grasp the essence of Korean modernity, this paper scrutinizes the differences between modernity in general, which has been developed in Europe and North America, and Korean modernity, which is often called to be a compressed modernity. This paper addresses that Korean modernity has both an ambivalence and the lack of credulity, which can be regarded as differences to modernity in general.
