Song, I-Yeong (1619 ~ ?), a mid-Joseon astronomer, was active in the era of the introduction of Shixian-li. His activity was recorded in Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, Diary of the Royal Secretariat, Comparative Review of Records and Documents-Its Revision and Enlargement, and Treatise on the Bureau of Astronomy. His life and career can be speculated through genealogy records of the Song Family from Yeonan and genealogy records of the Kim Family from Seonsan. We can summarize three major astronomical activities of Song. First, as a specialist astronomer, he observed an appearance of a comet. Second, he designed and fabricated the weight-powered armillary clock, which became a domestic model of the future astronomical clock. Last, he served as a professor of royal astronomers, providing great support in establishing the enforcement of Shixian-li. Song¡¯s post was concentrated on performing astronomical duties, which comprised about a third of all his works in the royal service. At the pivotal time of the Shixian-li reimplementation, Song was appropriated to provide a bridgehead for the stable enforcement of the calendar that lasted until the late Joseon Dynasty.
