Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Daradont shows his self-leadership successfully through a process of imprisonment in Shawshank Prison to escape from it. The purpose of study is to analyze the results of Cinema therapy program which carried out to improve the self-leadership. In the program, making the Shawshank Redemption as a text or a research material, Andy's way of life is examined out. Though he is put in prison unjustly by the false accusation, he accepts his actual situation, and then he does his work which he can do. And he gains inmates' confidence by doing them favor. He also shows his ability in accounting, and then he gains confidence of Warden Samuel Norton and guards. In his part, it enables him to dig a tunnel for escape from Shawshank Prison safely, and to modernize the Prison library, and to open a higher education program. It means that he is able to enjoy the sense of self-achievement, and also to give some benefits to his fellow prisoners.
Thus, it is plausible to say that the process of Andy's showing his self-leadership and achieving his goal is not for the fulfillment of his greed, but for the concern of the community, for the members of Shawshank Prison as a community. On the other hand, Samuel Norton emphasizes the Bible and regulations, and dominates over Shawshank Prison like God. He is a cruel man who infringes the human rights of the prisoners, and causes prisoners to die by his harsh punishment. Also, he gathers illegal wealth as an excuse to offer cheap prison labor by way of ��Inside-Out�� program, and he exploits Andy and Tommy to satisfy his selfish desire. In short, doing evil conducts as he pleases with no consideration on the community, he finally kills himself tragically. His way of life forms a contrast to Andy's way of life.
This cinema therapy gives us an opportunity to know what the true self-leadership is, by tracing the process in which Andy displays his self-leadership successfully, and also to lead our present way of life to more successful way of life, by examining how we apply his way of life to our own way of life. In addition, this cinema therapy helps us to know what kinds of the cautions are necessary in order to display desirable self-leadership, by taking warning by Norton's failure. And further, if we are able to take the way of life of Andy and Norton as a model, it will lead us to check out our own way of life, and to display true self-leadership.
