In Korean art research, the history of research on silver�\inlaid incense bowls began with dissertations ��The Incense Burners and Buddhist Bell in the Bongeun�\sa Temple(�����)�� and ��New Cases of Koryo Silver�\inlaid Incense Bowls�� published in 1957 and 1960, respectively, and there were eight fragmentary studies reported in Archaeology and Arts(���������g��) from 1961 to 1968. However, it is said that serious research on bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls in the Koryo Dynasty was initiated by Dr. Hwang Soo�\yeong through his paper ��A Study on Koryo Bronze Silver�\inlaid Incense Bowls�� published in the 1st volume of The Journal of the Korean Buddhist Research(���𔜌W��). Compared to previous fragmentary materials, the paper, which is the outcome of general research on pedestalled bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls in the Koryo Dynasty, comprehending all Koryo bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls inside and outside Korea, is considered highly meaningful in that it named Koryo bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls ��Hyangwan(����)��, clarified that the Geumsan�\sa Temple(��ɽ��) incense bowl and Sojae�\sa Temple(������) incense bowl in the U.K. were pedestals, and laid the foundation for systematic research on bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls by explaining the technical aspects of silver inlay(�y��z) through analyzing inscriptions and finding donors(������), monks(ɮ�H), and artisans(����) involved in the creation of incense bowls.
Moreover, his study is considered to have made great contributions to the academic circle in that it opened a new horizon of research on Koryo pedestalled bronze silver�\inlaid incense bowls, emphasized the importance of incense offering tools in Buddhist crafts, clarified the position of incense bowls in various types of Buddhist tools, systemized the shape and type of incense bowls, and suggested methodologies for research on silver�\inlay techniques.
