Fanweishu is a textbook for doing Jeomsan, a human resource jobamong other tasks of Gwansanggam in the Joseon Period. Since thisbook was first adopted as the examination textbook for Myeonggwahakin the days of King Sejong, is was employed again in Gyeonggukdaejeon,Sokdaejeon, Daejeonhoetong etc. Fanweishu, authored by Jin Danin a period between the end of Wu and the early Song period, wasedited by Jo Yeong in the Ming period, and then introduced intoJoseon, published, and used as a examination textbook.
Jin Dan��s Fanweishu was influenced by various scholarlyachievements transmitted from ancient time. The first influence wasfrom Seojapyeong type Saju, the second almanacs based oncalendar, the third Seoncheonsu and Hucheonsu, i.e., Beomsu andWisu, and the fourth Napeumohaeng.
There were great differences between the existing Seojapyeong type scholarship and Fanweishu in predicting the fortune. TheSeojapyeong type theories of fate mainly prophesied one��s fortuneby means of the sexagenary Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theoryrecorded in Saju, while Fanweishu predicted one��s fortune withGwaesang and Hyosang in the Book of Changes by yieldingGwae-Hyo via the number theory from the sexagenary cyclerecorded in Saju. It is believed to be Jin Dan��s effort to moreprecisely predict human fortune to try to make predictions based onthe Gwae-Hyo in the Book of Changes by means of numbers but notin the way used in the existing Seojapyeong type theories.
